Meet Lydia's Cakes - HatHats Cabinet Cakeover
In this blog, we meet Lydia from Lydia's Cakes, a Whitstable-based baking business.
Introduce yourself!
Hey I’m Lydia, I’m the owner of Lydia’s cakes. I am a one-woman business and do everything myself apart from occasional help from my mum and boyfriend. So I make everything from cookies to three-tiered wedding cakes. I’m so excited to be working with HatHats, and can’t wait for everyone to be able to buy my bakes during the Cabinet Cakeover.
Did you always want to be a baker?
So I haven’t always wanted to be a baker. In fact, I don’t think I ever really planned for it to be my job I just sort of fell into it and realised it’s what worked well for me and I was good at it. I enjoy being creative and baking and I’m happy that I get to do it as my full-time job now.
How did your business start?
I found a baker on Instagram actually and really liked how her cakes looked so used hers as inspiration and made a few similar for family and friends and then people they knew were asking if they could have one. So I just did that on the side of working for people I know and then realised that it could actually be my full-time job. Registered my business and got my hygiene rating and here we are.
What's your biggest failure - and what did you learn from that experience
You know what I don’t think I have ever had one big failure that I remember off the top of my head but I have small failures every week or even day to be honest haha. Unless you are superhuman nothing is going to run perfectly every day, it’s so normal to make mistakes. I often forget to order things I need or even sometimes put orders in my diary for the right day but the wrong month. It’s hard being the only person running a business as I have to remember every single thing and have no one else to help. But I learn from every mistake how to run my business more smoothly.
Can you clear this up... what is a blondie?!
So a blondie is just a white chocolate version of a brownie, they do look like slices of cake but it’s fudgy like a brownie. In my opinion, brownies are more delicious.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years' time, I would love to have my own studio or kitchen, as I’m still working from home which can be quite difficult with limited space. One main goal is to have Lydia’s Cakes treats more accessible for people to buy right now it’s only by order or when I do pop-ups. And I guess who knows, I never thought my business would be where it is now so I guess anything is possible.
What's your favourite creation you've made?
I can’t pick just one 😂 so here is a few of my favourites, wedding cakes I just love to do as it’s so rewarding to make something for someone’s big day.
